Administration Reveals Government Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Third Week

The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official directed the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any government staff had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the very day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since funding expired at the start of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
